Guns, oh my!

Here's a question for you.

I've already asked this on Twitter, but decided to ask my LJ friends too. Feel free to reply again if you've already tweeted your reply. This question is primarily aimed at those of us who cannot own firearms due to oppressive regimes (freedom my arse), but don't let that discourage you if you are lucky enough (and that's all it is for some) to live somewhere where it is your right to own a firearm.

If you could choose to own and use any firearm that is available to civilians in the USA, what would it be and why?

In my twitter post I had just mentioned that I would choose to own a Ruger Mini-14 Tactical, then added a H&K USP Compact after [livejournal.com profile] murries mentioned pistols.

Both choices would be due to their compact size, accuracy and reliability, as well as using common forms of ammunition (.223 Remington/5.56x45mm and 9mm Parabellum respectively, although the compact has other calibres available).

Send your answers on a postcard in a comment. :3

FN Five-Seven. Oooooh snap, just remembered I've got it on order down at the gun store. ;)

Sorry, brutha. I'm from California, which has some of the most oppressive laws for guns anywhere in the US, but I know it doesn't even hold a candle to the draconian laws they put down over there. I feel for yah. Disarming the population is the first step towards complete control, IMHO.

That's an interesting question, but I don't have any idea what firearms are legally available to civilians in the USA, and I also have no idea what other up- or downsides they might have. :)

Schoing Schnee, I don't know what is and what isn't legal over in the US, but I know a few bits of kit I'd like to own ^.^

P90 (probably illegal due to being an auto/semi auto rifle)

Sig P228 (legal I know, due to being pistol)

I'd probably want to own something like a simple pump-action shotgun, like a Remington 870 or a Mossberg M500. Why? Simple - you can use it for home defence, with different rounds, it can be used for hunting, and for target shooting, and it's a simple weapon to operate and repair, and has a huge range of aftermarket accessories and spare parts.
A handgun would be fun too, and that would probably be a lot more for taking down to the range and having a blast with, but with a secondary role for home defence. For that, I'd probably either agree with you on a USP, or a SIG P-226

I asked for sling swivels in a gun shop in manchester for a mossberg (i have an airsoft replica) guy gave me the strangest look in the world when i said it was for a non firing replica..

That said real mossbergs and the like lined the walls for sale.
Wish to had a firearms licence. No local gun clubs tho -,-

For what purpose?

Home defence?
Competition?
Hunting?

If I was ever in a position where I had to defend my life in a post appocalypse type scenario (and I hope to hell I never am); I'd be wanting reliability and sturdiness above much else. It's the AK all the way.

Back when I was a competition shooter, someone who attended the same range as me owned a high quality AnschÜtz which I fell in love with. I think it might have been a 1903. Next to no action recoil.

p90 civilian

Strangely, I haven't actually thought that much about this, and don't really know all that much about what's legal in the US.

I might go for a P226, but as I already have an airsoft version I might go for something different. Maybe a P99. I don't know really, but I do like pistols.

And I'd probably be boring and go for an M4 Carbine too.

I much prefer accuracy over 'power', so I'm not particularly interested in shotguns.

Knowing little about guns, I think I'd probably be best off with a shotgun. Messy, but relatively forgiving in the aim department.

Though one of those riot-guns sounds like an option. Non-leathal rounds, and can fire a wide range of stuff. Concussive, nets, rubber bullets, etc..

BTW, where's your twit at?

I don't know much about guns but you can't go wrong with a Magnum :)

Damn right!

I don't pretend to know the first thing about any guns and nor do I much care.

There you go

Easy to use, very efficient on close range. Typical riot gun.

[identity profile] nomadfox.livejournal.com 2010-04-11 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
After firing 45 to 48 cal hand cannons amongst other things, I'd go with one of those.

eather that and the spetsnaz ballistic knife for the lolz.:P

Trebuchet. Cuz who doesn't think a trebuchet wouldn't be fun.

(i'm assuming I also get the acres you need to launch or *very* tolerant neighbors. )
