Go Team Venture!

I spent a good portion of last night playing around with Gentoo, almost an hour of which was spent trying to figure out why the console framebuffer wasn't working right. In the end I just removed nvidiafb (framebuffer for nVidia cards) from the kernel and used vesafb (generic framebuffer) instead, which worked fine.

Tonight I plan to at least get X, ALSA and WINE installed. I'll be happy if I can be playing EVE before the end of tonight. :)

Many thanks go out to [livejournal.com profile] ceralor for his advice. My linux mind was stuck in Debian mode and I was having a hard time trying to remember how Gentoo works. Thankfully it's all coming back. :D

Oh yes, my machine is now called "Mother".

P.S. Thank you Bravo for adult swim, especially The Venture Bros.

i've tried watching The Venture Bros... haven't managed to get into it really :/

I thank Adult Swim for Robot Chicken - no TV program has made me giggle so much before ^^

Out of curiosity... why "mother"? o.o

I imagine it's a reference to the name of the computer in the film Alien. As in my comment below c.c

If not, I'm stumped and I look stupid :D

[identity profile] schnee.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmm, could be - I never watched that one, so I'm totally ignorant. :) As usual...

god bless geeks, my mate has just built his super music playing server and named it unicron.

for extra geek points why is my laptop named Eddie?
jacel: (Don't worry ma'am.)

[personal profile] jacel 2006-07-18 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Eddie's in the space-time continuum"? ;P

I imagine it's a reference to the shipboard computer aboard the Heart of Gold.

Full marks for Unicron, though :D:D:D

you win the internets

his girl friend well and truly put her foot down when he tried to rename her laptop Primus

and i got it wrong, his pc is called unicron, the new server is called cybertron

[personal profile] jacel 2006-07-18 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Does that mean the PC is going to try and eat the server as soon as his back is turned?

[identity profile] cloneboy.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)

Fully aware of the above. I was just trying to geek points and giggles ;)

You mean "wait for a day and a half until X compiles and then bitch if it doesn't" :)))

[identity profile] ceralor.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
*bouncesqueak*

And we get Xfce installed ^^; Apparently, we need to install the older version first, log in AT LEAST ONCE with it, then log out, go back to console, unmask all the newer, and install that.

You need to get on yahoo so I can play with talk to you this morning at work. It's gonna be slower than yesterday and I might even be sent home. The heat index is supposed to be 105F to 110F. }:=8/

Horray!!! >^.=.^<l;
jacel: (Breakfast?)

[personal profile] jacel 2006-07-18 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
*poke* Just a random question, since I don't run into you anywhere else to ask: Why do you have me friended?

Not that I mind, I'm just curious.

[identity profile] ceralor.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Uh.. cause we used to talk a while ago?

Dunno..x_x *hides*
jacel: (Default)

[personal profile] jacel 2006-07-18 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
Again, it's not as though I mind.

It's just there are a lot of people who have me friended who I don't even really know at all, and who evidently don't read my journal at all by the way they don't acknowledge the existence of posts directly targetted towards them, so my curiosity builds to the point where I just ask outright what they're gaining out of the whole thing :P

[identity profile] ceralor.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I do read, I haven't yet seen my name mentioned though. And I just usually don't think to comment. Most of the time I read my friends page without commenting at all, even for good friends.
jacel: (So grounded)

[personal profile] jacel 2006-07-18 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair 'nuff.

Remind me to pester you at some point, since despite making rather a bad first impression on me way back, that was about four years ago and it's hardly worth thinking about now :P

[identity profile] ceralor.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Pesterpester?

Yeah, I'm not at all like I was. Other than alive. And male. >_>

[identity profile] darac.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me guess, you're using an nVidia specific X driver? They're known to not play well with the nvidia FB driver. There's some resource that you need exclusive control over to properly use an nVidia. Thus you can't have both the Framebuffer and the X server using it.

You options are either to use the Framebuffer X driver or something like vesa-tng for your FB.

[identity profile] darac.livejournal.com 2006-07-18 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I am confused. I think nisabEs confuse easily :) I did read that you were installing X, but that just didn't register.

Yeah, vesa-tng's a nice idea but A) it's ia32-only B) it can only use the resolutions your BIOS reports and if, like my laptop, that doesn't include native, you won't get the nifty hi-res. But 1024x768 is close enough for me on my 1280x800 panel.

The Venture Bros. Best . . . show . . . EVER!

"Father?"
"Yes, Hank"
"I want to kill you. Whoa! Baby! *Jim Morrison-like screaming" *LOL*
