I spent a good portion of last night playing around with Gentoo, almost an hour of which was spent trying to figure out why the console framebuffer wasn't working right. In the end I just removed nvidiafb (framebuffer for nVidia cards) from the kernel and used vesafb (generic framebuffer) instead, which worked fine.

Tonight I plan to at least get X, ALSA and WINE installed. I'll be happy if I can be playing EVE before the end of tonight. :)

Many thanks go out to ceralor for his advice. My linux mind was stuck in Debian mode and I was having a hard time trying to remember how Gentoo works. Thankfully it's all coming back. :D

Oh yes, my machine is now called "Mother".

The framebuffer is mostly used for making the console look nice, so overall it's not important right now. I'll probably go back to it later and see if I can get the nvidiafb working.

The meat and two veg of graphics will come into play when I install X tonight, and for that I will be getting as much graphical performance out of it as possible. :P

And we get Xfce installed ^^; Apparently, we need to install the older version first, log in AT LEAST ONCE with it, then log out, go back to console, unmask all the newer, and install that.

Again, it's not as though I mind.

It's just there are a lot of people who have me friended who I don't even really know at all, and who evidently don't read my journal at all by the way they don't acknowledge the existence of posts directly targetted towards them, so my curiosity builds to the point where I just ask outright what they're gaining out of the whole thing :P

Let me guess, you're using an nVidia specific X driver? They're known to not play well with the nvidia FB driver. There's some resource that you need exclusive control over to properly use an nVidia. Thus you can't have both the Framebuffer and the X server using it.

You options are either to use the Framebuffer X driver or something like vesa-tng for your FB.

I think you're confused here, although I may have not made it clear enough.

X is not yet installed, nor are the nVidia X drivers, hence the paragraph that X are getting installed tonight. :P

Having said that though it was pretty silly of me to try using nvidiafb considering that I will be using the official nVidia drivers. And as mentioned about I am using vesafb. I should mention that this is an AMD64 system, so vesa-tng isn't an option.

Yes, I am confused. I think nisabEs confuse easily :) I did read that you were installing X, but that just didn't register.

Yeah, vesa-tng's a nice idea but A) it's ia32-only B) it can only use the resolutions your BIOS reports and if, like my laptop, that doesn't include native, you won't get the nifty hi-res. But 1024x768 is close enough for me on my 1280x800 panel.
