OK, lemmie set the scene. I wanted to go into town today to sell some old stuff(George Forman Grill, PS2 controller, Neo Geo Pocket Colour) so that I'd have some spending cash for the weekend. I got everything ready to go and was about set off when low and behold my flatmate tells me that so and so's coming round and wants to collect and old book case from my room. He was to come at midday.
So I stay in and wait.

I'm still fucking waiting. The shops have closed and wont be open tomorrow.

To top it all off [livejournal.com profile] rustyfox invited me to go have sushi with him in Leeds, which I've had to now decline because I don't have the spending money and there's still a possibilty that so and so will turn up.

Whatever happened to calling to say "Sorry, I'll be late."?

If you see me online at all tonight, be warned that I'll probably be quite emo.

OTOH I'm continually perplexed by those who claim abject poverty while at the same time spending $BIGNUM dollars/pounds/euros per week on multiple concurrent DVD/CD/gaming/satellite/cable/cellphone payments and subscriptions.

Surely you should focus on making the rent/mortgage payments before spending out on discretionary entertainments?

I agree to a point than many people waste money on things they don't need. Another part of me says "Hey, if you think living a dull boring life is such a wonderful thing, let's see you do it!" *nods*

There is a balance of sorts to be struck. Essentials should always come first, although as you point out, a life based solely on the bare essentials is no life at all, and for many people oppertunities to a better existance don't grow on trees. (Although irritatingly, others seem to find with no particular effort from themselves fantastic oppertunities. I believe you both make your own success and exist at the mercy of luck, good or bad).

That's what I meant. A life of "just getting by" becomes a rut. The stress resulting from that can be quite high and make life unbearable. I'm also amazed how some people are able to find great opportunities with little to no effort on their part.
