One thing I always find funny about World Cup time is that almost as soon as England get knocked out then all the St. George's flags go down.

This year was no exception. Within an hour of England losing to Portugal there was not a flag flying in my street, when there had been tons before. Seriously.

Since when did the St. George's flag stop being a symbol of England as a country and start being a symbol for the English football team. Methinks that it was probably around the same time that we Brits started taking the game too seriously.

Yep, we aren't 'alf a competetive bunch.

It is amusing, isn't it? You're saying "We don't care about the World Cup. We don't care about England as a country. All we care about is eleven men." when you take down those flags.

Why are people so ashamed to fly the flag once we're knocked out of the tournament?

Do you consider England as your country, or Great Britain as your country? I guess I don't quite understand the mental relationship of England vs. GB in the minds across the pond, or why the Olympics features Great Britain while the World Cup features England?

I'd like to see people with the Union Flag flying from cars and flagpoles and in shops and stuff, a bit of patriotism with a pretty flag :)

I certainly like seeing the Union Flag flying from the flagpole of the church I can see outside my house, but often its just a bare pole, just now and then will be the St George or Union Flag if its St George's day etc.

I was amused by that too. Although to be fair, most of those flags weren't actually proper flags. I don't recall the St George's cross ever saying 'ENGLAND' across the middle of it!

That became more annoying than the zillions of English supporters, uh, football supporters waving the biggest cash con on earth under my nose.

I mean, how fucking dumb do you have to be to not recognise the flag in your own country, that it has to say ENGLAND through the middle of it? Grrr!

But do you then root for the team that defeated you? I've always done so, on the grounds that, if my team were going to lose, I'd prefer it if they lost to the best. :)
